Am I a good candidate for cheek reduction surgery?

Cheek reduction surgery is a procedure entailing removal of part of the ‘Buccal fat’, which is a fat deposit located in our cheeks. The size of the buccal fat can vary significantly amongst individuals, and there is often a strong genetic component that dictates how much Buccal fat an individual has. Where the goal is reduce fuller cheeks, then cheek reduction (buccal fat reduction) surgery can be a very good surgical option to improve definition and cheek contour.

What does the cheek reduction procedure entail?

The cheek reduction procedure is commonly performed at an accredited North Shore or Norwest area private hospital under a general anaesthetic and takes approximately 1 hour. The Buccal fat may be removed via a small incision made on the inside surface of the cheek, hence leaving no external scars. It is important that the fat is not removed in an over aggressive manner as this will predispose the individual to a hollowed out look in later years. Following removal of the fat pad, fine dissolving sutures are used to close the incision that is located on the inside of the mouth.

How long is my hospital stay?

The procedure is typically performed in a day surgery setting. Discomfort is usually very mild allowing you to return home the same day.

What does my aftercare involve?

A specific post-operative instruction plan together with 24 hour contact details will be given to you at the time of your discharge from hospital to ensure that you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home. It is advisable that stay on a soft diet for the first week after your surgery. It is also important that use maintain good oral hygiene by using a mouthwash regularly. Your first post-operative visit will be at the 5-10 day post-operative mark and Dr Reddy will see you regularly during your recovery from cheek reduction surgery.

What is the down time?

Discomfort is usually very mild following cheek reduction surgery, with most patients only requiring simple over the counter pain medication.

Most patients will be able to attend to their day-to-day activities the day after surgery. While swelling is commonly found, this is usually mild. You may however choose to take a few days off from work. It is important to avoid any strenuous activities for approximately 4 weeks after surgery in order to minimise potential bleeding, bruising and swelling.

When can I see the final results?

Results start becoming apparent by the two-week mark. Most of the swelling will have resolved by now, but this will continue to resolve over the subsequent weeks. You will generally see the final results at the 6 week post-operative mark, although you may continue to see improvements in your cheek contour even after this time frame.
