The letters FRACS stand for ‘Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’. FRACS is the only authorised body in Australia to grant a Surgeon the title of ‘PLASTIC’ Surgeon.
In Australia, a ‘Plastic and Cosmetic’ surgeon (as opposed to a ‘Cosmetic’ Surgeon) will hold the title of FRACS (Plast). This indicates that the surgeon has undergone an internationally recognised and regulated training program with in the discipline of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. This equates to approximately 10 years of training following the completion of a medical degree.
During this period, aspects of Plastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic surgery are taught and learnt. Candidates are only privileged with the title FRACS after successfully passing a NATIONAL examination by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS).
A Plastic Surgeon (or often termed ‘Plastic & Cosmetic’ Surgeon) holds a FRACS in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. The title ‘Cosmetic Surgeon’ or ‘Cosmetic Physician’ does not hold a FRACS. While it is important to look for the letters FRACS next to your surgeon, it is also important to check whether the letters pertain specifically to Plastic Surgery, or another specialty.
