Liposuction

Liposuction is performed by Dr Chaithan Reddy at our North Shore and Norwest, NSW locations to extract unwanted deposits of fat from specific body regions.  Also known as liposculpture, liposuction targets these stubborn deposits of accumulated fat cells by utilising a thin cannula and a specialised suction device. It is an effective procedure in removing and reducing fat bulges that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Is liposuction right for you?

Liposuction can be performed to improve the shape and appearance of your body in any of these regions:

  • Waistline and abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Buttocks and hips
  • Neck and chin
  • Chest and back
  • Breasts
  • Arms

The only way to find out for sure if you are a good candidate for liposuction is to come in for a consultation with our plastic surgeon, Dr Chaithan Reddy, at our North Shore or Norwest practice location. Your candidacy for the treatment will depend largely on how much excess skin you have and the quality of your skin tone.

What’s involved in the liposuction procedure?

Small volume procedures can be performed in our own fully equipped procedure room at one of our practices using only local anaesthesia, but for the most part liposuction procedures are done under general anaesthetic at the hospital. Before anaesthesia is administered Dr Reddy marks out the regions that are planned to be treated, and you will confirm the areas. Liposculpture can be used as a body contouring procedure, or also to treat excessive fat deposits in the area of the face. The body regions that can be treated effectively include the chest, back, abdomen and hips, thighs, upper arms and neck.

A suction cannula is inserted underneath the skin through a tiny incision, only 2-5 mm big and then used to suction the fat out of the fatty deposits. The cannula is moved back and forth through the deposits to break the fat up, and it is then removed through the suction tubing.  When the procedure is completed, you a compression garment that has been measured to precisely fit the affected region of your body will be applied to exert gentle compression to the areas that were treated.

Liposuction is commonly used in other procedures, including tummy tuck surgery (clinically known as abdominoplasty)breast reduction, and neck lift. It can also be combined with virtually any other plastic surgery procedure, including breast surgery and facial rejuvenation surgery.

What is the length of time most liposuction patients stay in the hospital?

The vast majority of patients (except for patients who have undergone ‘megaliposuction’) are actually able to return home on the day of surgery. Our plastic surgeon will check in on you after the procedure is complete to ensure your comfort and preparation for the period of recovery. A plan for your post-operative self-care will also be provided to you along with contact details that will be accessible to you 24 hours a day to ensure that you have peace of mind and can recovery comfortably and safely at home

All dressings and sutures will be removed at this visit. It is recommended that you continue to wear your compression garment for a total of 6 weeks as this will optimise your liposuction results.
