At The Plastic Surgery Clinic, we offer a full range of procedures designed to meet the unique needs of our male patients.
Plastic surgery for men at our North Shore, Norwest and Westmead clinics has become increasing popular in recent years. We are seeing more and more male patients taking an interest in their appearance and health. Dr Chaithan Reddy takes into account the unique goals of his male patients, tailoring their plastic surgery procedures so that their masculine contours are enhanced and brought to the fore.
Liposuction For Men
Liposuction, also known as liposculpture, is a procedure designed to eliminate unwanted deposits of fat. Typically in men, areas that are prone to excess fat include the abdominal region, chest (commonly referred to as male breasts or “man boobs”), and hips often referred to as “love handles”.
Liposuction can also be used to treat unwanted fatty deposits in the facial region as well as the upper neck area, which is responsible for a “double chin” appearance. The surgical scars are routinely less than a centimeter and the downtime is minimal.
Am I good candidate?
Liposuction for men is commonly performed to improve body contour in the following body regions:
- Hips and waistline
- Neck and chin
- Breasts (man boobs)
It is important that you speak with your plastic surgeon to assess whether you are a suitable candidate for liposuction. Suitability for surgery will depend mainly upon the amount of excess skin and your skin tone.
The procedure is usually performed under a general anaesthetic. Smaller volume liposuction procedures can however be performed under local anaesthesia in our fully equipped procedure room. Prior to your anaesthesia, Dr Reddy will mark out the planned regions to be treated. Liposuction can be utilised for both body contouring procedures as well as for the treatment of excess fat deposits in the facial region. The procedure is undertaken using a suction cannula that is passed back and forth through the fatty deposits. In the process, the fat is broken up and removed via the suction tubing. The small bore cannulas are inserted under the skin via small skin incisions (2-5mm in size). Upon completion of the procedure, a compression garment (measured to your body region) will usually be applied to provide gentle compression to the treated areas.
Almost all patients (except ‘Megaliposuction’ patients) may return home the same day. Dr Reddy will check up on you post-surgery to ensure that you’re comfortable and well prepared for your recovery period. A specific post-operative instruction plan will be given at the time of your discharge from the hospital (or clinic), as well as a 24 hour contact number to ensure you are completely at ease during your recovery period at home.
Dr Reddy will see you regularly during your recovery period, with a post-operative review at 5-7 days after surgery. All dressings and sutures will be removed at this visit. It is recommended that you continue to wear your compression garment for a total of 6 weeks as this will optimise your liposuction results and help reduce swelling. You’ll continue the specified post-operative visits until both Dr Reddy and yourself are completely satisfied with your progress. All subsequent follow-ups are included in your surgical fee.
Discomfort is usually minimal following liposuction. Most patients will be able to walk and attend to their daily needs shortly after the procedure. We recommend avoiding any strenuous activity and returning to work once you feel comfortable to do so.
Results will be quite evident with in the first few days after your surgery. However, bruising and mild swelling will still be apparent at this stage and may persist for 2 weeks. You may also notice some alteration in sensation in the treated areas. This generally resolves within the first few weeks after surgery. Majority of the post-operative swelling is expected to resolve within 4 weeks after surgery, and the final result will become apparent at the 3 month post-operative mark. For some individuals it may take longer for all residual swelling to completely resolve. It is important you wear your compression garment for the instructed period in order to minimise post-operative swelling and fluid retention.
Cosmetic treatments for Men
The Plastic Surgery Clinic also offer the following procedures for male patients at our North Shore, Norwest and Westmead locations.
Eyelid reduction surgery, clinically known as blepharoplasty, is commonly undertaken to eliminate unwanted deposits of skin in the upper or lower eyelid region.
Heavy upper eyelids, or bags under the eyes can contribute to an aged appearance to the male face. Excess deposits of tissue and eyelid skin can also lead to a hooded, heavy or tired appearance to the eye region. If there is a significant excess eyelid skin and tissue, then partial obstruction of one’s vision can also occur. It is important to inform your specialist of this, as you may be eligible for the Medicare item number.
As the eyes form a central feature of the face, blepharoplasty surgery can have a dramatic impact on restoring a youthful appearance to the facial region. The procedure may also be undertaken in the privacy of our state of the art procedure room, with minimal downtime and immediate results.
Unlike the softer female face, a strong and well-defined lower jaw and chin are the hallmarks of a masculine face. Inserting an appropriately selected facial implant(s) in the planned position, can augment the lower jaw, in order to achieve the desired result. The implants used have an excellent safety profile and can be inserted via a small incision from either under the chin, or from an incision inside the mouth.
Chin and jaw augmentation implants can accentuate your existing features, thus creating further chin and jaw definition. Chin implants in particular can have a dramatic effect on your overall facial profile, particularly when combined with a rhinoplasty procedure.
In both men and women, the effects of ageing become particularly evident in the lower face and neck region. This can lead to the development of jowls, and loss of normal neck definition and contour. In advanced cases the loose skin, which tends to hang under the lower jaw can take on the appearance of a ‘turkey neck’. A neck lift procedure entails re-lifting the ptotic (saggy) tissues, removing any excess tissues, and using the underlying SMAS (muscle) layer to help support the lifted tissues.
A lower face and or neck lift can help to restore a youthful appearance to the facial region, and when performed with meticulous attention to detail, can look very natural.
Rhinoplasty refers to the surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose. Variations in nasal shape may arise through general development or following trauma to the nasal region. Rhinoplasty may be performed for a variety of reasons, including:
- Reduce the size of a prominent nose
- Remove a bump (dorsal hump) from the bridge of a nose
- Correct nasal asymmetry
- Straighten a crooked or deviated nose (particularly after trauma)
- Further refine the appearance of your nose
- Improve the nasal airway and ability to nose breathe
The procedure is undertaken in hospital as either a day surgery case or 1 night stay.
A Medicare item number (and potential Health fund rebates) will also apply in cases requiring surgery following a history of nasal trauma, or in individuals with nasal breathing difficulties.
Cosmetic injectables are becoming an increasingly popular treatment for men. Their minimally invasive nature along with their very little downtime, has led to their increasing popularity. Cosmetic injectables include anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers.
Anti-wrinkle injections are often used to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Anti-wrinkle treatments work by weakening the superficial muscles that cause skin wrinkles. Our team at the Plastic Surgery Clinic have had extensive experience in anti-wrinkle treatments with the end result focussed on achieving a refreshed wrinkle free look, rather than a frozen appearance. Anti-wrinkle treatments may be undertaken on their own, or combined with other treatments including surgery and dermal fillers.
Dermal fillers are products (typically HA) used to fill prominent facial folds or creases. Typical treatment areas include the nasolabial folds (cheek creases extending from the bottom of the nose), and deep frown lines. Dermal fillers may also be used to augment particular facial regions, including the jawline and chin, creating a more masculine and defined lower jaw. The results are immediate and with little downtime experienced.
