Tummy Tuck Surgery

Tummy tuck surgery, clinically called abdominoplasty, is performed at our North Shore and Norwest, NSW locations to eliminate excess fat and skin from the abdominal region. The underlying abdominal wall muscle, which is often weak, is also tightened, thereby improving not only abdominal contour but also abdominal wall integrity. Dr Chaithan Reddy performs tummy tuck surgery using the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques at his disposal in order to produce the most refined and elegant results possible.

Who is the ideal tummy tuck surgery candidate?

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) operations are oftentimes performed to address post-pregnancy bulges, excess skin folds that may result from massive weight loss, and obesity. The aim of abdominoplasty surgery is to obtain a slimmer waistline that’s also more taut and well-defined. We can also refine the region of your belly button in order to achieve a younger, more aesthetically pleasing appearance of the abdomen.

There are a variety of types of tummy tuck surgery. These range from short scar mini-abdominoplasties to traditional Pitanguy style abdominoplasties. Dr Reddy is able to perform all types of tummy tuck surgery at our plastic surgery clinics in the North Shore and Norwest , and has also learnt techniques from the internationally renowned Ivo Pitanguy Clinic. The choice of procedure in your case will be dependent on the amount of abdominal laxity and skin, the scar length, and your desires and goals.  This will be assessed at your first consultation and discussed with you in detail. The procedure may also be supplemented with liposuction in order to further define your hips and thighs.

Some female patients also choose to combine abdominoplasty with breast augmentation or a breast lift as part of a more comprehensive body contouring plan.

What does abdominoplasty entail?

Patients are put under general anaesthesia during the abdominoplasty procedure. Before you are put to sleep be the anaesthetist, Dr Reddy will draw the planned incisions on your body for your confirmation that they align with what you had decided together during your pre-operative consultation, and he will ensure that optimal symmetry is achieved. The incisions are also designed to fall within the bikini line in order to conceal the scar.

After the anaesthetic has been administered, the Dr Reddy will make the incisions and remove the excess abdominal skin, exposing the abdominal muscle layer underneath. An important part of the abdominoplasty procedure is the retightening of the lax abdominal muscles. Once this retightening is achieved, the skin of the abdomen is placed over the muscle layer in a more taught fashion. The excess skin and fat is now measured and removed. Once this layer has been sutured back into position, the umbilicus (belly button) is repositioned in the correct location.

Dependent on what you discussed with Dr Reddy during your pre-surgery consultations, he may then administer additional liposuction. Drains are also routinely placed prior to the final skin closure. The drains are usually removed within a few days, while you are recovering in hospital. An abdominal binder (compression garment) will also be placed around your abdomen once the surgical procedure is complete.

The final results

Your results will be immediately evident at your first dressing change, which will take place at your first post operative check-in with Dr Reddy 5-7 days after the procedure. An improvement in the contour of your hip and abdomen will be obvious, although there will still be some slight swelling and bruising at this time. By the end of two weeks, most of the bruising should have disappeared. The rule of thumb that we go by is that your will be able to see the final results with no interference by residual swelling, at 3 months post-operation. We will provide you with specific advice regarding long-term scar management as well as skin care. We may also recommend a specific regime of skin care and possibly even Heal-lite therapy in order to facilitate the process of healing.
