A common complaint amongst both women and men relates to the loss of contour and neck definition, which is often a result of ageing. A neck lift procedure is designed to remove excess skin and fat, and return a more youthful contour to the neck area.
Who is a candidate for neck lift surgery?
Anyone with excess skin laxity in the neck region presents as a suitable candidate for neck lift surgery. This condition is often referred to as a “turkey neck” for patients who suffer from severe skin laxity and excess fat.
The neck lift procedure
A range of surgical techniques may be used during a neck lift operation to address the skin, fat and/or muscle. Certain cases may require additional procedures to address prominent neck muscles or glands.
A neck lift procedure may also be performed to correct other age related changes including removal of unwanted fat deposits surrounding the neck region, correcting a “double chin” and jowling. Some individuals suffer from prominent banding along the front of the neck due to a separation of the normal neck musculature away from the midline. This can usually be addressed with a submentoplasty (a type of neck lift procedure) and platysmoplasty procedure via a small hidden incision under the chin.
Dr Reddy will formulate a treatment plan that is suitable for your specific neck shape, and one that best addresses your needs and concerns.
General anaesthetic is used for the neck lift procedure, so you will be asleep for the duration of the treatment. Before you are put under sedation, Dr Reddy will draw out the planned locations of the incisions and confirm these with you again. Once you’re under sedation, the skin and soft tissues surrounding your neck will be lifted and re-positioned to achieve a tighter, more youthful look. The doctor will also remove any excess deposits of fat. The underlying facial muscular layer (SMAS) will also be re-suspended. This step isn’t performed by all surgeons, however, Dr Reddy has the strong belief that this step is key to achieving long-term results that will be sustained.
Finally your skin will be closed using delicate, fine-gauge sutures and a custom-made dressing will be applied to your face at the end of the procedure
You may decide to include other procedures in addition to your neck lift surgery, including chin implants, dermabrasion, lip lift, facial fat grafting, brow lift, blepharoplasty, and midface lift. These additional procedures can also be performed while you’re under sedation.
