Unfortunately, they also become an unwanted area of focus as age-related changes start to affect the eye region. Even early age related changes can become most apparent around the eyes.

What is eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty also known as eyelid surgery, addresses the excess baggy skin and fat, as well as the lax muscle that should normally suspend the eyelid in a youthful position. Dr Chaithan Reddy performs blepharoplasty at our North Shore Plastic Surgery Clinic, and also in accredited hospitals. Blepharoplasty is a very effective surgical procedure to alleviate heavy eyelids, improve vision in advanced cases and cosmetically enhance the appearance of the eye region.

Who is a candidate for blepharoplasty?

Generally, anyone who has signs of ageing as a result of excess skin or droopy eyelids are considered a good candidate for blepharoplasty surgery. With ageing, various changes occur within the periorbital (eye) region. The skin of the eyelids often becomes loose and baggy. This can present as hooded upper eyelids or “bags” under the lower eyelids. In the upper eyelid region, excess skin can be so severe it can obscure the normal field of vision. For the lower eyelids, loss of skin elasticity and build up of fat deposits may contribute to an aged appearance, forming as a ‘tear trough’ deformity. This concern can contribute to the appearence of dark circles under the eyes.

How is eyelid surgery done?

An eyelid reduction procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthetic. Dr Reddy will educate you on the specifics of each option and help you to make the right decision for your unique case. Before anaesthesia is applied, the planned incisions will be marked out on your face. Using a precise measurement device, Dr Reddy can ensure optimal symmetry.

During the procedure, Dr Reddy will remove the excess skin and fat deposits from around your eyes. This process will have been carefully planned to ensure that the right amount of fat is removed to achieve the desired results, without causing a ‘hollow’ effect. Following the removal of skin and fat, the incisions will be closed with fine gauge sutures designed specifically for such delicate work. Finally, Dr Reddy will apply specific eyelid tape dressings and cool packs to your eyes.

What is the recovery time for eyelid surgery?

Recovery time is a minimum of two weeks and stitches are removed within the first week after surgery. Immediately after surgery there may be swelling and redness that will go down with time and rest. Bruising typically resolves within a 2-week time period.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty

In certain individuals, rejuvenation of the lower eyelid region may also require replacement of lost volume in order to restore a youthful contour. Tear trough deformities (under eye hollows and groove) can often be corrected with a combination of fat transposition techniques and fat grafting. This will help to achieve a more youthful and smoother lower eyelid contour.
